Burnout…feels exactly how it sounds

Exhausted. Sad. Stressed. Worried. Low. Helpless. Hopeless.

Burnout happens when the demands placed on you outstrip the resources you have, whether this is in relation to work, parenthood, or perhaps more existential concerns about the climate.

Burnout is a process that can become chronic, and you may be so used to ignoring the signs your body is giving you to pause and rest, that at some point it says ‘enough is enough’ and makes you stop. This can be through physical illness and fatigue, as well as through overwhelming feelings of sadness, anxiety, self-criticism and shame. Burnout is also highly linked to specific mental health presentations like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). All of these experiences and symptoms can be deeply distressing, especially if you have always been a person who looks after other people and holds yourself to a high standard.

When you are in a state of burnout, there are lots of things you need - physical rest, social support from friends and family, and perhaps a change of circumstances or environment. However, it’s also extremely important to discover what internal processes have contributed to your burnout, and how to shift these into something more positive that will help you get better - this is where therapy comes in. Oftentimes the way we relate to ourselves has been entrenched from earlier life experiences, and reflecting on these patterns in a safe space with a trained therapist can be a vital step in making positive changes.

With my substantial clinical training and experience I can help you understand all the factors that have led you into burnout, provide a warm and containing space for you process your emotions, and support you into feeling re-energised, happier, and more able to cope with life’s challenges.
